Hunger Index Around the Globe

The BBC News that, in 2009, one billion people around the world were malnourished. In this number, children made up over half of those without enough food. Children under 2 years of age are said to be at the most risk for starving. The results of malnutrition cannot easily be reversed after the age of 2. From 1990 to 2006, the number of people going hungry around the globe decreased, but in recent years, it has increased. This is thought to be due to a global recession and the current prices of food on the global market. Twenty-nine countries report their hunger situation to be in an "alarming" state, while two report it to be an "extremely alarming" issue. Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia have been reported to have the most accounts of malnutrition and starvation. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization defines a diet with less than 1800 calories a day to be classified as hunger.
