India and the Commonwealth Games

Countries have seen the economic boost China endured during the 2008 summer Olympics. India is the latest nation that is trying use sports as a way to gain recognition to their culture and ethnicity. It is also true that India is a rising economic power. India has been growing rapidly, has a very large population, and even more important is their rising middle class. All these factors have lured global companies from the West to want to pursue economic opportunities in India. However, the Commonwealth Games are not as prestigious as the Olympics, and India has a lot of work to do in order to make the Games attractive. Many of the Western sports teams have been upset with how unprepared India is to host the Commonwealth Games. There have been photos of bad housing accommodations for athletes and their families, and a violent tourist shooting that has made some skeptical if India is going to be able to host a successful Games. On the positive side the Commonwealth Games will bring over 54 participating countries, and is a chance for India to show off the bright parts of its country. This is the first time India will host a world sporting event, and all countries hope that they are successful.
