A group of armed men abducted two foreign peacekeepers working for UNAMID on Thursday. They had arrived only hours before the incident. The peacekeepers were held at gunpoint while being forced to lay on the floor. The men broke into the residence of four peacekeepers. Two of them were taken away in a van while the other two were being tied up, one of which escaped, the other has yet to be found. City officials closed off exits from the city in hopes of locating the vehicle that was carrying two of the men. This is the first time a foreign peacekeeper has been taken in central El-Fasher. It is widely believed that the kidnappers motives had to do with money. The kidnapping raises concern about Sudan's security. It is believed that people's safety is becoming more and more at risk every day. When the group of UN workers arrived in El Fasher, they were met by many angry protesters who made it very difficult for the group to leave even the airport. These protesters were supporting President Omar al-Bashir who is thought to have committed war crimes. The UN workers are to be moved to a more secure location in order to prevent future trouble.
