Philippines and Muslim rebels set to sign key peace plan

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are making a peace plan with the Philippine  president. This was just a first step in peace between these two groups. Many violent outbursts have been made with these rebels over the past 40 years. This is only the beginning because the plan will not begin to take effect until 2016 or when the term of the current president ends. There have been many attempts at peace for the past 15 years but they have all ended in violence.

Philippine Peace Plan

For forty years there has been conflict in the Philippines with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). MILF is the country's largest Muslim rebel group. Conflict between MILF and the Philippines has cost around 120,000 deaths. For the last 15 years, negotiations with MILF has ended in violence. The framework of this agreement, though, states that the parties are committed to  reaching a "comprehensive deal" by the end of the year. The agreement provides for a new autonomous region in part of the south where Muslims are a majority in a mainly Catholic nation. President Benigno Aquino announced the deal last week, but warned that there was still much work to be done. Though, it is hoped that the agreement will be implemented by the end of Aquino's term in 2016.

Rebel Arms Flow Is Said to Benefit Jihadists in Syria

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/15/world/middleeast/jihadists-receiving-most-arms-sent-to-syrian-rebels.html?pagewanted=2&_r=0&ref=world

The arms that Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supplying to, supposedly, Syrian rebels, are actually making their way into the hands of Islamic jihadists.  The White House's stand off approach in the Syrian conflict has begun to be questioned by some.  The White House has been trying to take a democratic minded approach to the conflict instead of direct involvement.  Instead of providing arms directly to the Syrian rebels, the Obama administration is giving information to countries that are supplying arms namely Saudi Arabia and Qatar.  The question that arises is should the U.S. be taking a more direct approach in order to ensure the weapons go where they are meant to go.  The Syrian opposition is too disjointed to arrange for mass weapons pick ups and the jihadist groups are using this fault to their advantage.  They are simply pretending they are one of the Syrian rebel groups and gaining weapons in a relatively easy way.  At times it is not even the Saudi Arabians or the Qataris that are supplying the weapons.  Sometimes, it is a third party.  The weapons are changing hands far too many times for it to be possible to ensure they are getting where they are intended to go.

"Iran Denies role in Gulf cyberattacks"

This article is about Iran denying their role against the accusations that they "rendered 30,000 computers," against oil and gas companies in the Persian Gulf. The virus that wiped out data on the 30,000 computers, did so, by overwriting the files. I quote "probably the most destructive cyberattacks the private sector has seen to date." This is truly bothersome to me because not only does Iran condemn the actions of our U.S. government but they also, allegedly, tried to cripple our private enterprises which fuel our nation's success and in the end result, political action. It appears to me as if the Iranian government was truly responsible for such actions they are trying to start a war, an to me that is frieghtening considering what they may be capable of (nuclear weapons). Iran states they are willing to help improve cyber security and that they too have been victims of cyberattacks. The issue with cyberattacks is that they can be done from anywhere across the globe that is connected to the international infrastructure of the internet. Thus making the blame game very hard without hard proof that someone is responsible. I see this as a foreshadowing of what is to come in future conflicts. Cyberattacks and cyberterrorism is due for its debut, and I am more then sure it will play a bigger and bigger role in our global society. Much of our nations infrastructure is fueled by the internet and technology. This news is pretty disturbing for it effected companies who make millions and millions of dollars which fuel our economy and make lead to future similar attacks on our capitalist/private economy.

The Cuban Missile Crisis Revisited

The Cuban Missile Crisis Revisited

Why It Matters Who Blinked

The Cuban Missile crisis has been studied over and over again. It gave us a view of how political leaders acted in times of crucial situations. James Nathan argues that how Pres. Kennedy handled the Cuban missile crisis is how our current international leaders should handle Iran and North Korea. The real story of the Cuban missile crisis was kept from the public. The concessions that the U.S had made were kept secret to avoid any sign of weakness of the Kennedy administration. Both Graham Allison and Nathan agreed that threats can be useful in negotiations but it can also undermine policies. Nathan also points out that aside from using threats, compromises should also be made to prevent a worse outcome scenario. It is worth remembering what Allison said when U.S Speaker of the House Tip O’Neil said that “All politics is local.” Pres. Kennedy’s decisions were also determined by how the US public would perceive him. Allison considers that the Cuban missile crisis was resolved by the combination the firmness and resolve of Pres. Kennedy, the use of threats, compromises and restraints.

Mauritania's president mistakenly shot by his nation's troops

In Mauritania Africa the president was supposedly accidentally shot by his own troops.  The president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and his convoy were driving back to the capital of Nouakchott on Saturday when they began to receive shots from a nearby military unit stationed on the side of the road.  The president survived and said everything was fine and that the incident was simply an accident but others believe that it was a planned assassination.  Witnesses of the incident say that they saw gunmen shoot at the president and then ran away.  Mauritania is very unstable politically and which is why they are confronted with threats from Al Qaeda.  The U.S engages with Mauritania in lots of issues such as security, food, trade, human rights and counter terrorism   In recent weeks the security in this state has been increased because of concerns with armed terrorist groups in nearby countries.

22 Dead in Northern Nigeria

Dogo Dawa, a village in the Kaduna state of Nigeria, was blanketed with violence on Sunday when 22 people were killed. It is believed to beva revenge attack by an armed gang because 4 gang members were arrested the day before. The gang, from a different village, mobilized early Sunday and swarmed the village in an attempt to rescue the 4 members. The investigation also revealed that 2 of the gunmen were killed aswell. Many of the victims were killed as they were leaving mosque. These areas are particularly violent because of large amounts of weapons flowing in, religious tensions between Muslims and Christians, and this well known gang constantly attacking villages.

Crown Jewels & Ghana Royal Family

While on a business trip to Norway, the King of Ghana was robbed of precious jewels that had been handed down through the Ashanti family for generations.  This occurred at a hotel in Oslo during a business conference, where the briefcase containing the jewelry was stolen.  This extravagant jewelry that the Ashanti family wears is worn during public appearances, and is used to represent the power and significance of the Ashanti family.  The jewels that are incorporated into these pieces are said to have spiritual significance as well.  Some of the people of Ghana are now questioning if their king is going to be dethroned because of this.

Radical Islamists Create List of Unwed Women

Panic is rising over the list of unwed women that radical Islamists in Northern Mali have created. The list brings about fear that these women will be severely and inhumanely punished. These radical Islamists have been known to conduct public executions, amputations, and other extremely torturous punishments. In July, these extremists put a man and woman who committed adultery in a hole and stoned them to death while other residents watched. I think this list is definitely a cause for concern, especially since women and children are the most targeted in this country. A close eye should be kept on these radicals to ensure that the unwed women on the list go unharmed. If other countries let this issue go undetected, a lot of people could die, so they definitely need to step up and take control of the situation before it gets any worse than it already is.

Mauritanian President Shot

Just recently,  President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz was shot my military forces on Saturday. His injuries were treated and made a public announcement about the shooting. The President claimed that it was an accident or "friendly fire" is what the he called it. Even though the President believes it was an accident, that is not the case with others. Others claim that it was an attempt at assassinating the President of Mauritania. He had a history of unstable politics and threats from Al Quaeda members. The issue is till being looked into.

Syrian Govt. Uses Cluster Bombs

In order to reverse strategic gains made by a rebel group, the Syrian government took to dropping Russian-made cluster bombs over civilian areas. The use of these cluster bombs has been banned by most countries. A cluster bomb is designed to drop many "bomblets"on a widespread area to maximize deaths. International law states they are illegal but Syria, U.S, China, and Russia, all have not signed on under that convention. The leading human rights watchdog, Human Rights Watch (HRW), says Syria should be tried for war crimes for dropping cluster bombs on a civilized area.

Rio Police Focus on Slums

Having earned the right to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, Brazilian authorities have accelerated efforts to clean Rio's drug-infested favelas. The most recent bolstering brings the number of agents patrolling the streets just shy of 7,000.  Raids occurred early Sunday morning and involved 800 agents in riot gear. Ahead of international showcases for the city, the crime-ridden neighborhoods are at risk of entering the spotlight. Similar to Beijing's pollution issues of 2008, Rio is attempting to diminish the significance of its least admirable aspects. Whether the recent momentum is a superficial, temporary band-aid or an honest, long-term solution remains to be seen.

EU is puttin the BAN on IRAN

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/14/us-eu-iran-sanctions-idUSBRE89D0IJ20121014
The European Union is getting tired of Iran.  They are making active measures to attack its economy, regardless of the effects it has on its citizens.
They are banning metal trade and oil purchases from Iran.  They are trying to ensure a Europe that does not contribute to Iran.  In the last month, the $Rial has lost 2/3 of its value as compared to the dollar.  Ouch!
The reason for all of this is their disdain for Iran's nuclear agenda.  Since Iran is still getting Up And Atom without regard to any international treaty, EU's first tactical strike against them is in the pocket.
I can only wonder what will happen to the country because of this.  I don't believe Iran will stop their policies due to these new sanctions.  How much will their citizens have to suffer due to the global overlords playing God with Weapon and Wealth.

Pepsi Bottle Boys in Afghanistan

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/14/world/asia/afghan-boys-eke-living-amid-peril-at-gorge.html

This article is set in Mahi Par Pass, Afghanistan. The Jalalabad is a very dangerous road right on the Pakistani Afghanistan border. It is also one of NATOs main supply routes but is also one of the deadliest roads in Afghanistan. Boys that make very little money work the traffic of this road. They are called the Pepsi Bottle Boys because one of their only tools to direct with is a soft drink bottle that they wave in the air to get the attention of the truck drivers. These boys come from the Eastern city of Kabul and are very poor and this is really the only source of income that they are able to earn in there devastated economy. With out the boys there to direct traffic there wiould likley be an accident everyday but at the same time this puts there own lives in danger. Many of the personal stories of the boys are very sad and desperate. They work to provide for there families who because of the war and the government can not find jobs. The little money they do get comes from the bigger trucks and would be the equivalent of 2 or 3 dollars a day in American dollars. This article makes me realize a lot that I take for grantite. The next time that I am having a bad day and am complaining about work and school I will rememeber the story of these boys and be thankful that I get payed well and dont have to risk my life.

Syria Getting Worse Every Week

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2012/10/20121014103651157108.html

Last week Syria was struck by Turkish explosives after a rogue Syrian explosive killed Turkish civilians. This week, the Syrian government is starting to once again use cluster bombs to attack civilian populations in regions controlled by the rebels. The use of cluster bombs has been banned in most countries and human rights groups declare the use of cluster bombs to be a war crime. This is due to the fact that the bombs often do not explode right away but remain active for up to a year. Oddly enough the United States has not banned the use of cluster bombs.

What struck me most about this article was the proof of consistent chaos in Syria. Every week some new bit of chaos has ensued in the country. Something else that intrigued me was the video in the article which said this has not been a civil war in which people on the ground are fighting with other people on the ground. Largely, the rebels have had success on the ground while the government uses weapons such as cluster bombs to kill civilians and rebels. I think this is greater evidence that the United States should intervene in Syria. The rebels are already a sizeable force on the ground, so we wouldn't need to deploy ground troops. We would merely need to prevent the use of airplanes by the government and I think the war could be over relatively quickly. However, neither Romney or Obama will take this stance because they have both shown themselves to be slaves of public opinion. Since public opinion wouldn't want the war, neither candidate would be willing to go to war even if they knew that it would be better in the long run if we asserted our hegemonous dominance in the world.

British Authorities charge 5 Royal Marines with Murder in Afghanistan Death

Nine British marines were detained for suspicion related to a death in Afghanistan last year. Four of them were later released with no charges, but five of them were charged with murder of a man simply labeled as an "insurgent". Reports show that there is a video of the marines discussing whether or not they should give the man medical help or let him die. He later died. This story has caused commotion throughout the world especially in Britain where the marines are from. A Facebook page in support of the marines was made and quickly reached close to 40,000 members. The Facebook page says,
"This page is set up to show support for the seven Royal Marine Commandos arrested for murder for an event which happened in Afghanistan 2011 where no civilians were injured and one gunman was killed who shot at them FIRST" It will be interesting to follow this story and see what kind of sentence, if any these marines recieve and if there is any more details about the incident that will come out in the future.

Pakistani Girl Shot by Taliban Was Named for a Battlefield Heroine

Malala Yousafzai, the girl shot by the Taliban, has a 50-50 chance of living. Currently, she is stable but still unconscious. She will have to be transported to a different country for better healthcare. Even Obama has offered to have her air lifted over to America for one of the hospitals here. The Taliban has admitted the attack on Malala. The spokeman for the Taliban even stated that once she is better, they will attack Malala again. Her father has been on the Taliban attack list for a while. He is on this list because he is in charge of a school for girls. The Taliban had decided to attack Malala first, then go after Ziauddin, Malala's father. Ironically, Malala is named after an Afgan herione. This Afgan heroine died in battle, but she was a fierce fighter.

Syria Bana Turkey Civillian Fights Over Territory

During the last few weeks there have been conflicts that have arose due to the territory around the area. This happened just days after the interception of a Syrian flight was intercepted by Turkey. When uncovered the Syrian flight plane was carrying Russian made munitions that were bound for the Syrian army. Tensions have been rising over the past weeks due to the deaths of civilians over cross border incidents. Turkeys government has backed this opposition and has called for the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad. This ban on flights has been seen before when it was done over the space in Akrana. Turkey has not yet announced such a ban, but did say that it will continue to down Syrian planes that they suspect are carrying military cargo.

Data on Iran Dims Outlook for Economy

Oil production in Iran is an essential component to the economy.  Unfortunately, oil production fell in September, leaving Iran in its weakest level in nearly a quarter-century.  According to the International Energy Agency, Iran's ability to produce oil will decline "for years to come if Western sanctions were not lifted."  Further signs of economic weakness were acknowledged as there were severe drops in automotive production and port calls.  In addition, the rial (Iran's currency) "lost 40 percent of its value against the dollar this month."  This drop has significantly increased the cost of imports of auto parts and the rial is now one third of what it was worth three years ago.  Even middle-class families are scrambling to put food on the table, and the poor are suffering even more.  Outside economists have suggested that the sanctions, which have restricted Iran's ability to sell oil and engage in international banking transactions, are having a profound effect on the situation.  On the other hand, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Ali Larijani, says that majority of "the problem is rooted in the government's mistaken policies."

Turkish Prime Minister criticized UN's lack of action in Syria

On Wednesday, Turkey stopped a Syrian plane, flying from Moscow to Damascus, to check if the plane has military equipment and ammunition, but Syrian militants refused that the plane did not include such things. This has caused the tension between Turkey and its neighbor, Syria. Russia, the major ally of Syrian leader Basher al-Assad, argued that Turkey's interception of the Syrian plane can cause danger to passengers inside.

Turkish Priminister Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed that United Nations should be doing something for the conflict with Syria. He also stated the U.N.'s "unjust, unequal and inactive mechanisms" prevented more and more from meeting its responsibilities day by day. In his argument, if UN is making decision only upon the polls of five permanent members, and fails to take any action, the history of Syria will later be scarred for a very long time. International peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi went to Istanbul on Saturday to talk about current conflicts between those two countries. His visit results in the consensus with Saudi King Abdullah on the required action to cease the violence in Syria, which is killing millions of Syrians.

Catalonia Continues Down the Road to Independence

Spain has major financial problems right now and an unemployment rate of over 25%. Spain has tightened up the belt in all of its 17 regions, including Catalonia in order to try to save money. Catalonia and several other regions have asked Madrid for bailouts in order to stabilize and save their economies from hitting rock bottom. Spain barely has enough money to run the national government let alone help bailout these regions. At the Barcelona-Madrid soccer game, thousands of fans from Barcelona chanted "Independence!". This large display of nationalism is causing a major stir between Madrid and Catalonia's major city Barcelona. For centuries, Catalonians have sought independence from Spain but never have had any success. However, with this financial crisis going on, Catalonians are becoming more and more agitated with Spain and their drive to obtain independence is growing. The separatist movement is pushing the president of Catalonia to consider a plebiscite in order to give Catalonians the chance to vote for independence from Spain. The problem with this is that technically that would be illegal because in Spain's constitution, only the central government can call for a plebiscite.

Mali Extremists Compile List of Unwed Mothers

In Mali, radical extremists are making a list of unwed mothers in the area. People are afraid that these extremists will use this list to find and punish the unwed mothers. These punishments are feared to be stoning, amputations, and executions. It is thought that these extremists will punish the mothers because they have said that the laws don't allow relationships outside marriage. The U.N. decided in a resolution Friday to send international troops to the area to provide assistance. The U.N. targeted human rights abuses in its resolution. The radicals have, in the past, held public executions, amputations, floggings, and other cruel punishments.

Jordan Struggles to Absorb Refugees

The latest estimates of refugees in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq are 300,000. Unicef is the key provider for these camps. These camps are what offer the education to the children. Some are learning basic addition and subtraction and others Arabic vocabulary. 14 school tents were opened up by Unicef last week in the Zaatari camp. This camp is ts in Jordan. The biggest problem is that the people miss their homes in Syria, and hope to have a future. The lack of resources is the biggest initial problem though. The Jordanian government and the aid organizations are running out of these resources. The Syrian children at these camps have been on their best behavior. For instance, a young 3rd grade girl always raises her hand in class, others always sit quietly until addressed by authority. More than 17,000 Syrian children are registered at camps in Jordan.

The EU wins Nobel Peace Prize

On Friday the European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting peace, democracy and human rights. The award is supposed to be a reminder of how the EU has transformed most of Europe from a war torn continent to a peaceful one according to the Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland. The award is being seen as a moral boost because of the struggling economy. Many politicians, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francios Hollande welcomed the award;some, such as the British government made no comment while many citizens of EU countries are viewing the award with skepticism and some even saying that the EU isn't worthy of the award at this time. The editor in chief of small Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy, which was among those nominated, said it was an honor to lose to the EU.

Strange Beauty Treatment Kills Woman

http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/10/world/asia/hong-kong-beauty-treatment-death/index.html?hpt=wo_c2

Four women in Hong Kong went to the DR beauty center for a bizarre beauty treatment that involves DC-CIK therapy. This procedure removes some blood from the person, concentrates it and "processes" it, then puts the blood back into the person. This procedure is usually used for cancer patients, and even for that purpose it isn't highly recommended. How it functions to enhance beauty is still unclear.

One of the four women who got this procedure last week has died from septic shock as a result of the DC-CIK. Two of the women are in critical condition and the fourth is currently stable.

The DR beauty center claims they didn't do this procedure, that they simply referred the women to a private doctor who administered the process.

Bomb-Making Materials Found in France

In Paris, France, after the arrest of Islamic radicals were arrested on Saturday, October 6, French police discovered bomb-making materials and numerous weapons in the continuing investigation. French police now see a clear dangerous terrorist cell. Two suspects had been detained in Torcy, Paris with components for bomb making as well as a shotgun and handgun  found. During one of the arrests, suspect Jeremie Loiuse-Sidney had fired on police and was shot dead after the attack. Earlier, police had found Louise-Sidney's DNA on a bomb that was used on an attack on a Jewish market in Paris. Also within Louise-Sidney's home, police had found a list with the names of Jewish institutions. Jewish leaders fear that they are under attack due to the American movie that made fun of and showed Muhammad as well as due to a small French newspaper creating a satirical comic on the same subject matter. Franco Holland, president of France, met with Muslim and Jewish leaders to let them now that they will do all that they can to put an end to radicalism, terrorism, and antisemitism.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei says EU support for sanctions is ‘foolish’

Supreme Leader Khamenei was stating about how European countries that support sanctions are "Foolish" because they are going against the Tehran for the sake of the United States and by doing so, they are only putting their countries at risk. Although, Iran's currency only continues to worsen and inflation continues increase, Khamenei foresees that they will still be able to come back from this setback and "win" this war against the United States and their allies. Khamenei thinks that the EU has greater problems to focus on then if their civilian program is truly to help with curing cancer and other health issues rather than hiding an nuclear weapons program. Khamenei stated how their problems seem worse than their struggles with the sanctions and mismanagement of their government, considering the state the economies of many EU countries. It is clear that Iran is going to have to start finding alternative means of creating revenue than depending the export of raw materials. Afghan Gov't At Risk of 'Implosion'

The International Crisis Group is warning that the fragile government in Kabul, already mired in a state of chaos, may completely collapse as early as 2014. The fast-approaching date outlined by the Belgian think-tank is not arbitrary; by then, UN troops will have completed their withdrawal, and a presidential election also looms. On the heels of fraudulent presidential and parliamentary elections in 2009 and 2010, Afghanistan finds itself at the precipice of disaster. Another place Afghanistan can be found is at the top of numerous "failed state" indices, thanks in large part to incessant violence that has increasingly been directed towards police. Economic troubles hang like an albatross around the nation's neck. 2014, once a looked-forward-to date within Afghanistan, is increasingly being viewed with angst.

Eurozone rescue fund launched

The Eurozone has official launced their new permanent fund to bail out struggling economies and banks.  This new fund is being led by the European Stability Mechanism, or ESM for short.  This fund will give out $650bn by 2014, 27% of which is coming from Europeans strongest economy: Germany.  The new ESM will be led by the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Jean-Claude Juncker, who is also the head of the Eurogroup.  The Eurogroup is hoping that the ESM will be a large step towards a monetary union in the EU (or the universal sharing of currency).   However, many people are saying that $650bn will not be enough to stabilize the EU.  For perspective, 1 country (the US) owes 28 times more of the amount that the entirety of the EU will be getting.  Even though the US is a larger economy and of size, splitting $650bn among several different countries might not be as effective as people hope it will be, seeing as $150bn that Greece already got was not effective in restoring its economy.

Nigerian army kills dozens of 'terrorists'

Nigerian soldiers were in a gun battle with 30 "suspected terrorist" believed to be part of the Boko Haram.  This battle took place in northeastern Yobe state.  Troops from the Nigeria Joint Task Force began the raid in a search and cordon operation.  Lost of equipment such as 6 rifles, 90 rounds of ammunition, knives, telephone sets, bows arrows, daggers and explosive devices were found.  These terrorist fighters are being blamed for 1,400 deaths in Nigeria since 2010.  Last month 35 members of the Boko Haram were also killed during a fierce gun battle and 60 people were arrested during that month as suspected members of the terrorist group.  Nigeria is slowly but effectively killing and arresting these terrorist.

Gentle crocs and hippos pay house visits to Nigerians

Nigeria floods kill dozens, wash hippos and crocodiles into homes

A flood in Nigeria washed a bunch of water, hippos, snakes, and crocodiles into peoples' homes.  Besides the onslaught of some of the most dangerous animals you'd want to find in your living room, the drainage of the area is so poor that the water levels cannot subside.
148 died from this.  21 Nigerian states were affected.
The people are being displaced with no actual place to call home.  CNN.com isn't stating what's happening to these people besides a few quickly built camps, but with 134,000 people affected by these floods, where will they go?  Who's burden will they be?  Will we divert breast cancer awareness funds to help some people in Africa, or maybe Red Cross can give them aid.
So long as the flood is there, it can be imagined that their economic stability will be hurt.  Though there isn't news on their economic contributions or state of being, with hippos and crocs roaming around, unless they have an equivalent of Steve Irwin they are out of luck.  I wonder what chain reaction this will play.  Taking into account refugee status, no one gives refugee status for storms.  So now all of these people are simply homeless.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/08/opinion/mitt-romneys-missing-foreign-policy.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0

This article criticizes Mitt Romnet's lack of a specifically stated plan for how he will handle foreign affairs.  The author identifies that Obama's policy has a counterargument, but Mr Romney simply has not explicitly stated it.  As the US public opinion continues to slide toward isolationism in terms of foreign affairs, Romney must construct a compelling case for our continued and aggressive involvement in world politics.  Romney's weaknesses in this area are presented:  his Iran policy differs little from Obama's.  He identifies Russia as a serious geopolitical threat, though he failed to present evidence to back up this claim.  The task before Mr. Romney is to make a case for US strength and outline his specific plan in order to give voters confidence in the US' future in international affairs for the coming term.  He must show how he will be different than Obama, and how is approach will be more effective.  So far, he has simply promised that he will in fact be different, just not in what way.  If he continues to tread this line, he may simply be written off as a repeat of George W. Bush, and he will lose much of the swing vote in the process.

China’s state capitalism

China’s private companies are being affected by the perceived ties it has with the Communist party. State-owned enterprises (SOEs) of China that prospered because of cheap loans and subsidies are giving a bad name for privately held companies in China. SOEs would be losing money if their subsidies and loans are taken away. They don’t give back to the government and officials who run it becomes more powerful than communist party leaders themselves and prevent any regulation. Chinese private companies have been expanding its reach world-wide. When Chinese private companies buy into sensitive industries (security or tech related) world-wide the transactions are flagged by the home government. Recently, US Congress has issued a warning preventing two Chinese telecoms company into expanding in the US market. President Obama also blocked a Chinese private company from buying a wind farm near an American military installation in Oregon according to the article. The Chinese companies or SOEs are suspect of spying for the Chinese government.

Libya’s Prime Minister Is Dismissed

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/08/world/africa/libyas-prime-minister-is-dismissed.html?ref=world&_r=0

The Libyan Parliament voted to oust Prime Minister Abu Shagour.  This shift comes at a strange time because only he had the actual power to form an investigation to find out what happened at the American Embassy and control the militias that have taken control of the streets.  Others have the power to do so in title but no actual power to enforce the orders.  No suspects have been questioned or detained, and the Obama administration has had an intense strain put on it because it needs to decide whether or not to take unilateral military action.  This is a concern because it could upset the only Arab nation that views the United States in a positive light.  Benghazi is not the only problem facing Libya.  The country is still dealing with towns that refuse to recognize the central government.  The country is now facing a power vacuum.  They need to elect a new Prime Minister but the question is where is he going to come from.

Turkey Retaliates

Turkey has been retaliating against bombardment form northern Syria for the past five days. A shell launched from Syria landed in Turkish town Akcakale on Sunday, October 7th. There were no reports of casualties. Though, the shell did land several hundred meters form where five civilians were killed on Wednesday during a previous Syrian artillery fire. Three mortar bombs fired from Syria landed near the Turkish village of Guvecci. This action prompted retaliation fire from Turkey. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan says that Turkey does not want war, but has warned Syria not to test Turkey’s resolve. Erdogan said in a speech on Sunday that:

"You have to be ready at every moment to go to war if it is necessary. If you are not ready for this, you are not a state. What did our forefathers say? 'If you want peace prepare for war' ... If you suffer an outrage, you will do what is necessary. Look, we are retaliating in kind. If you strike, you will see the retaliation immediately."

South Korea preparing for War?

Previously due to an accordance placed upon South Korea, South Korea has had restricted missle parameters under U.S. enforcement. Now, the accordance has been revised. South Korean missles are allowed to manufacture long-ranged missiles with restricted payload. The long-ranged missiles can hit anywhere in North Korea, even if launched from the southernmost part of South Korea. The original accordance was instated due to the fear of a regional arms race between North and South Korea. The reality of it was that the U.S. was restricting South Korea from keeping up with North Korea's militaristic capacity. It is no surprise that North Korea has been stockpiling military weapons and utilities. The new revision was allowed by Obama, due to that they "...are of prudent, proportional and specific response." The accordance is reasonable, but frightening to those who fear what North Korea will do with the knowledge of the revisions. The North Koreans may see these revisions as an act of war. The North Koreans' missiles are capable of hitting not only South Korea, but Japan, and the U.S. pacific territory of Guam. The North Koreans have not responded thus far. The world waits as North Koreans prepare their response, which many fear to be harsh and unforgiving.

Chavez Reelected

Hugo Chavez won reelection in Venezuela with 54% of the vote with 90% of the ballots counted. Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles received about 45% of the vote. Chavez claims to be the heir to Simon Bolivar who is viewed as a hero in the country. He also connects with the citizens due to humble roots and speeches. Despite the connections he has with the citizens there is a number who are upset with the lack of progress on fixing various issues such as violent crime, poor roads, blackouts and government corruption; the majority of the votes for the opposition came from such people.

Iran Denies Plan to End Nuclear Standoff

Iranian officials have denied that they offered a nine step plan to stop producing uranium that could be converted into nuclear weapons. It was reported that Iran gave this plan to Western countries, but that may not be the case. Iranian officials argue that they need to keep producing this uranium to run civil and medical reactors but according to this report they would also stop producing that uranium. Iran's top  nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili denied on Saturday that Iran offered up any type of plan. The news agencies that have spread this story say the plan was offered up by Iran to European countries, but Iran says they are untrue and call the stories baseless. This is a serious matter because Western countries fear that this production of uranium is a cover to produce atomic weapons and stories like this only further complicate the issue.

Venezuela election a critical test for divided nation & longtime President Chavez

There has been a lot of tension in Venezuela over the election with current President Chavez and his opponent Henrique Capriles.  Chavez is a socialist who has had control of Venezuela for 14 years, and Henrique has been a serious challenge for him.  Chavez's supporters made sure polling stations stayed open where votes had not yet been cast, and intimidated voters by parading around in motorcycles, wearing red Chavez shirts. Chavez's supporters however deny that they are intimidating anybody.  If Capriles wins, the policies are bound to change drastically from the way they were under Chavez's rule.  Capriles will stop negotiations with Cuba, looser economic control will follow, as well as more private investment.  It is stated that there is much corruption under Chavez's control, but Chavez-supporters like him because he cares deeply about his country. The people of Venezuela are getting tired of this divide between the political aspect of the country because they want to be able to reconnect with both people from both parties. Chavez has spent a lot of money on social programs, but the murder rate has gone up under his administration, and the government has been accused of corruption. People are concerned that regardless of how this political race ends, the Venezuelans will remain divided for a long time.

Flood in Nigeria

Just recently, a flood affected many Nigerians; killing 148 people. According to Red Cross, approximately 134,000 have been effected by the numerous downpour of rain. Many families were forced into makeshift camps because their homes have been destroyed. It is said that the parts of Nigeria that were effected included Bayelsa and Benue. What makes this flood even worse is that the land has become swampy with sea water mixing with fresh water. It has caused animals such as hippos, snakes and crocodiles to end up in peoples houses. It is even worse because there is still no relief available. Locals are heading to higher ground and staying in schools.
