Japanese hostage Kenji Goto purpotedly Killed by ISIL

January 31, 2015. ISIL released a video on Saturday showing the beheading of Kenji Goto, the second of two Japanese hostages held by ISIL. While the video has yet to be verified, it shows a hooded ISIL operative standing over Goto with a knife against Goto's throat. The masked operative addresses Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, saying, "Because of your reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war, this knife will not only slaughter Kenji, but will also carry on and cause carnage wherever your people are found. So let the nightmare for Japan begin" (america.aljazeera). The video is then followed by footage of a headless body with a head placed on top. Aljazeera reports that Japan's government is looking into the video to see if it can be authenticated. It's also important to note that the operative seen with Goto spoke with a British accent, as seen in previous beheading videos.

The United States has made statements about the video saying that they strongly condemn ISIL and their actions, and call for the immediate release of all of ISIL's remaining hostages. This video comes after a deadline on Thursday for the release of convicted terrorist Sajida al-Rishawi. Then, ISIL made an offer to release both Goto and a Jordanian pilot for Rishawi.

At the current moment, the video did not mention the Jordinian pilot.
