Obama plans U.S. trials for Guantanamo Inmates & to Close Prison

By: Brett Hulett

With President-elect Obama's party preparing for their eventual takeover of the White House, the prison at Guantanamo Bay has been a hot topic of late. Obama has pledged to close down the prison for good, but is still in the process of drafting a plan for doing so.Guantanamo Bay has served as the United States' military prison under the Bush administration and has been the source of a number of controversial and scandalous occurrences. Many believe the shutdown of Guantanamo to be a good idea, however all feel that it is going to be easier said than done. As of right now, the prison has over 250 captives who are able to be released. The problem is that nobody will take them--numerous countries have stated they will not be the one to foster a known terrorist or suspected terrorist. So now Obama's supporters are contemplating drafting a completely new legal system, something many democrats are opposed to. On the other side, Republicans are not at all willing to have suspected terrorists sent to U.S. soil for shelter or trial. This has all been set in motion because experts feel the military tribunals are unconstitutional and are merely an excuse to hold people hostage for long periods of time. New ideas call for the increased legal rights of these individuals--an idea many are fearful of. Personally, I also fear this idea somewhat. These people are there for a reason, and I don't feel that increasing their rights is the right message to send to potential terrorist groups. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds.
