London Elects Its First Muslim Mayor

Sadiq Khan has been elected as London's mayor, becoming the city's first Muslim mayor, and a major Muslim politician in the west. He has worked as a human rights lawyer, and is now a leader of the Labour Party, beating out Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith. Khan was born in South London after his parents had immigrated from Pakistan. In his acceptance speech, he recognizes that the election "was not without controversy", but is "proud that London has today chosen hope over fear and unity over division". With Europe struggling with the rise of Islamophobia, particularly after the Paris attacks in November, Khan's election is indeed being seen by some as a huge step by the people of London away from fear.
