Saudi judge: It's OK to slap spendthrift wives

According to a Saudi judge by the name of Hamad Al-Razine, it is okay to slap a women if they spend too much money. He stated this at a seminar for domestic violence while talking about the increase in domestic violence. The Judge was quoted by the Arab News as saying, "if a person gives SR 1,200 to his wife and she spends 900 riyals to purchase an abaya from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment." Women in the audience were shocked to hear this statement and protested it loudly.

I was personally not too shocked to read this article because of the lack of women's rights in the area. However, the lack of rights does leave a bad taste in myself. I know that women's rights are quite behind compared to ours but still, a man of the law, one who is supposed to uphold justice saying that it quite repulsive to me.
