Explaining "Brexit", Britain's Vote on European Union Membership

A referendum is being held by Britain on June 23, 2016 for citizens to vote on whether or not Britain should remain a member of the European Union (EU). This referendum is being held as a follow through of one of British Prime Minister David Cameron's re-election promises. His decision to hold this vote was stirred by vocal conservatives in the country who believe the country would be better off without being a part of the EU. Those for the division believe it would help retain Britain's sovereignty and power, as well as giving them some economic relief in regards to the EU's regulations. While some economists think that a split would be beneficial to Britain in the long-run, it is generally thought that a split would not necessarily be beneficial to either Britain or the rest of the EU member countries. The economic effect would be dependent on the settlement that is decided upon in the event of a vote to separate.
