Interpreting Taliban Attack on U.S. Embassy

After 20 hours of what has been described as "harassing fire" at both the NATO headquarters and U.S. Embassy in Kabul, The Taliban Militants behind the attack have finally been defeated. The effectiveness of the last decade of military strategy is being brought into question in light of the recent attack. Kabul has been boasted as one of the most secure cities in Afghanistan and this attack on high profile targets in Kabul was aimed to sway public opinion about the ability of the national Afghan government to provide security to its people. This is also causing a re-evaluation of our knowledge of Taliban strategy. Could this be a move of desperation by a weakened Taliban or is it a demonstration of the capabilities of a stronger Taliban and the ineffectiveness of coalition military strategy in Afghanistan?
