Quran burning sparks protest

Unrest in Afghanistan followed a demonstration in Mazar-e Sharif on Friday in which five demonstrators and seven U.N. employees were killed. The protests spread to Kandahar on Saturday where hundreds of demonstrators flooded the streets to protest the burning of the Quran by a U.S. church. Although the protest began peacefully, the demonstrators turned violent, torching a local school and vehicles. As a result, nine people were killed and seventy-three were injured. Seventeen people were arrested by Afghan security forces. According to witnesses, a number of witnesses were shot by police. A spokesman for the Taliban said the group was not behind this attack.
