Tyre Nichols remembered as beautiful soul with creative eye- Hailey Morsovillo

Tyre Nicholas was a 29 year old father who loved to take pictures. On January 7, he was pulled over and was attacked by five Memphis police officers. He died three days later in the hospital. The cops were charged with second degree murder. Tyre was a sweet guy. When he walked in the room he brightened the room. Many people raved about Tyre and how sweet he was. Everyone said how much of a good human he was. When the video came out of Tyre getting beat everyone was just in disbelief because he was just such an innocent soul. People can't grasp that he is gone.

Italian anarchist protest for Alfredo Cospito

Within the country of Italy, 55 Alfredo Cospito supporters have been found torching cars and threatening officials in protest against the poor conditions under which Cospito has been during his one hundred-day hunger strike while imprisoned. This has led to new restrictions consisting of one monitored family visit and one telephone conversation a month. These new conditions have been used in the past to help cut off mafia bosses from getting or relaying information to the outside world.

Tyre Nichols Dead After Being Killed By Five Cops

On January 7th, 2023, after Tyre Nichols was heading home from taking picture when he got pulled over by police for a traffic stop that turned into something brutal. After three days Tyre died in the hospital. Reports say that Tyre was told to come out of his car by one police officer even after not even doing anything or even told why. The officer was being aggressive with him after putting him in handcuffs, Tyre tried to flee the scene because he was scared for his life. After the five police officers tased him and brutally beat him down. The video that was posted online you could see how the the five officers were tosing, kicking, and punching Tyre like he wasn’t even a human. You could tell how comfortable these cops were performing this brutal act even though they were on camera. Who else knows what crimes they did and got away with it. Since then all five officers have been charged with second degree murder and fired from their jobs. This the first time we’ve seen this happen after something brutal like this happening with the police. When I say first time I mean them being fired and arrested for their crime then more or less than 24 hours but we all know why but that’s for another blog

Turkey on Sweden NATO Membership

Russia’s war in Ukraine has led to many things over the past year including energy shortages in Europe, devastation in Ukraine, and the unity of many western countries, especially in NATO. Finland and Sweden have bid to join NATO in response to growing tensions in Europe as Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine and continues to show hostility with the west. Recently at a Swedish protest a Quran was burnt by protesters and Turkey has doubled down on their decision to deny Sweden NATO membership. Sweden has responded saying that it was a racist attack and the Swedish government condemns the action. Turkey has since responded telling Sweden to “determine” their next moves on their path to join NATO. By Michael Gill

How India's New Bridge to Kashimir Divided a Region

A new link bridge in India is nearing completion that will connect the relatively isolated Kashmir and Jammu region to the rest of the country in a streamline way. However,  when the British relinquished control of India in 1947,  it was divided along religious lines, and the region has been under a land dispute between India and Pakistan that the United Nations has acknowledged. The inhabitants of of Kashmir, which is majority Muslim, fear that as this link bridge allows for easier access to the Indian military to the region, the true motives of the bridge being built have to do with exerting more control on Kashmir and possibly attempting to change its demographics to be majority Hindu. This fear is fueled by the India  government's move to take away Kashmir and Jammu's autonomous status in 2019.

Russian Citizens Ignore Putin's Propaganda

In Russia where tensions between Putin and the rest of the world continue to rise, citizens express their lack of attention. Many conservative social media outlets including televised talks feature conservative voices that blindly obey and promote Putin's agenda. Citizens express their distress over the powers that are influencing Russian media. Many share stories of friends that were drafted into the military to help the invasion and are now lost in communication. Editor Nic Robertson talks about economic complications involving both the White House and Berlin and how Putin is being forced to restrategize in order to avoid completely jeopardizing Russia's economy.

Israel Strikes Iran Amid International Push to Contain Tehran

Israel had sent three small quadcopters targeting a munitions factory in the city of Isfahan where Iran's air defense is located. Israel and US have been practicing different approaches in order to stop Iran from aiding Russia in Ukraine. Israel believes that this is one of the best ways to stop Iran from aiding Russia and not ruin the relationship they have with Russia. Since Russia and Israel have had a year-long understanding that has allowed Israeli warplanes to repeatedly strike Iranian targets inside Syria, where Moscow provides air defenses for President Bashar al-Assad, Israel believes that helping Ukraine indirectly would be the better approach to maintaining relationships between Russia and Israel.

China, Taiwan, and the United States

Numerous analysts/policy makers believe that China will invade Taiwan before 2024. This would cause a really difficult dilemma for the United States on whether they should support China or Taiwan. There is a military act that binds the United States in helping to defend Taiwan under any force or coercion. Also, because Taiwan is a democracy in Asia, there is a strong ideological pull for the US to defend Taiwan.

However, there goal of the United States, in relation to China and Taiwan should be to keep "peace and stability," not to rush to the conclusion of whether or not Taiwan is it's own country. This means that the current goal of the US should be to stall any conflict from happening.  The biggest point of importance is that the US needs to not back China into a corner. (Foreign Affairs)

Cuba turns to Russia for market reform advice

Cuba has partnered with a Russian thinktank sponsored by Oleg, a sanctioned Russian oligarch. This partnership aims to reform Cuban markets, with a focus on the private sector. This may be worrying for American politicians, and poses the chance at another Red Scare if the rhetoric is powerful enough. This opens the door to increased interaction between Cuba and Russia. It is hard to say what exactly may come of this, but it is worth watching closely.

Western Countries to Send 321 Tanks to Ukraine

According to Omelchenko (Ukrainian ambassador to France), roughly 321 tanks will be sent to aid Ukraine in its next phase of war with Russia. While it was not specified which countries are providing the tanks, it is confirmed that the US is sending 31 M1 Abrams and Germany is sending 14 Leopard 2's - after months of Germany postponing their decision. As for other Western allies, Poland is waiting for Germany's permission to send their Leopard 2's. Russian ally, North Korea, has since accused the United States (and its allies) of "crossing the red line" by sending their tanks to Ukraine; North Korea confirms that it will "always stand in the same trench" as Russia as Ukrainian allies are in "total disregard of Russia's concern about security."

Palestinian Gunman Kills 7 at a Jerusalem Synagogue

On Friday, January 27th, a 21-year-old Palestinian man opened fire outside of a synagogue in Jerusalem. Taking place on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the gunman is said to have killed 7 and injured 10 Israelis during the shooting. This comes one day after the Israeli Defense Forces raided the Jenin refugee camp and ended up killing 9 Palestinians in the act. US officials are not mincing words, calling this shooting an act of terrorism on social media. Tensions between the Israelis and Palestinians only seem to be on the rise.

How Russia dodges oil sanctions on an industrial scale - Carter Vance

The West issued sanctions against Russia to try and halt their economy and limit their ability to profit from the sale of crude to Western countries in an effort to support the Ukraine.  Russia has found a work around to the sanctions and operates in the "grey" trade.  This allows them to ignore the price caps and not operating illegally as they work through countries who are not part of the blockade.  These sanctions have brought new players into the crude business with India, Turkey and China gaining ground through 2022. It is worth noting that countries Russia is too powerful to be curbed by such a simple sanction.

The United States and Germany's Aid Toward Ukraine

With the war still unfolding with Ukraine and Russia, military aid is arriving soon for Ukraine. Germany and the United States has agreed to send Ukraine some powerful tanks from their own armies. This will dramatically increase the firepower of the Ukrainian forces and should be something that Russia should be worried about. However, The United States was pressured into sending the tanks by Germany. Germany said that they will only send tanks if The United States does as well putting pressure on the United States. The pressure ended when the United States agreed to send the tanks.

AP African American Studies Course Rejected In Florida

For months schools in Florida high schools have been rejected of the education of  African American studies due to Florida’s education department rejection. The rejection was due to concern of the material that would’ve been taught to the students which was called “ too violent” and certain novels written by authors that were also a concern. Discussion in court brought up the other reason they decided to remove this course from high schools because studies such as African American Studies are brain washing the students and also not letting other students live up to their beliefs. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis critics and other White House officials have accused DeSantis of only banning the course because of certain ideas and topics he didn’t like being thought in the course because not only a few months ago he banned Black Queer Studies being taught at any of the schools also. So this doesn’t have anything to do with the course being “brainwashing” or something everyone agrees on. This is one person arguing something that doesn’t concern him in the first place and also how does a topic like that even come into conversation?

Antiwar Protests in Russia

Following the Russian missile strike on Dnipro, which killed 46 and injured 80, many citizens of Moscow have been participating in a quiet protest. After social media showcased citizens leaving flowers and plush toys at the site of a statue commemorating Ukrainian poet and playwright Lesya Ukrainka, Russian citizens in other cities have taken up the act as well. There have also been some altercations with pro-war protestors at these sites. Some view these flowers and plush toys as a pointless protest that will leave little impact, but the protesters are facing punishment for their actions. For many of the protestors leaving flowers, it is an act of brave resistance and mourning with such consequences as 10 years in prison.

Airlines plot fight-back against France’s short-haul flights ban- Hailey Morsovillo

France banned short-haul flights. The biggest thing the European Union is trying to fix is to limit emissions. They think these short flights can help that. Climate change is a problem and they think this can fix it. Some people are outraged about this. Especially the French Airports, they think it will just add up to a small amount of the air transport emissions. Obviously the airports don't want to do this because they will be losing money. I am on both sides. I do really think the emissions are causing a real problem to the world. But I also think that with such a small amount of emission it can not have that big of a factor on the world.

New Zealand Swears in New Prime Minister

After Jacinda Ardern resigned last Thursday, Chris Hipkins has been sworn in as deputy Prime Minister. There will be an election in October to officially decide the new Prime Minister but Hipkins will act as Prime Minister for now. Hipkins closely worked with Ardern to form many of the policies she put in place during her time as Minister. Hipkins has been a member of Parliament since 2008 and served as Minister of Education, Minister of Police, and Minister for the Public Service. Although they have different personalities, their politics are fairly similar hopefully making it an easy transition.

Germany Will Send Tanks to Ukraine

In recent global events today, January 24 Germany has just decided to send leopards 2 tanks into Ukraine in order to help out with the Russian invasion. Along with this lend-lease Germany also gave permission for Poland and other countries that obtain German tanks to send them into Ukraine as well. What this means is that more NATO members will be able to assist Ukraine in their battle against Russia hopefully even further tipping the scales to end this foolish war.

Violence in Afghanistan Leaves Lawmaker Dead

Afghan lawmaker, Mursal Nabizada and her bodyguard were shot dead in her home in Kabul on Sunday, January 15th in the early morning. Police are continuing the investigate who carried out this attack and why. Violence like this has been increasing in Afghanistan since the Taliban took control of the country in August of 2021. This attack was just one of the many signs recently that there has been deteriorating security at the Capital. This is the first time a lawmaker has been killed in a violent attack, but many other workers and citizens have been victims of violence. The week before this, about 5 people were killed in an explosion near the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, last year a suicide bomber killed 25 young women in an education center, a few weeks before that 6 people were killed in another suicide bombing at the Russian Embassy, and a month before 21 people were killed during a prayer service bombing. The United Nations Assistance Mission of Afghanistan is very worried about this reoccurring violence and says, "Violence is not part of any solution to bring lasting peace to Afghanistan."

Why China's New Foreign Minister Could Be a Problem for Biden

Qin Gang, who is China's new foreign minister, had previously held the position of Ambassador to the US. During his tenure as ambassador, he received treatment from the Biden Administration that the article describes as "being shut out", including not receiving every US meeting that he requested. Chinese President Xi Jinping promoting Qin to Foreign Minister amid the blatant cold shoulder treatment from the US is indicative of larger ongoing tensions between the two countries. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken;s upcoming trip to China will prove as a test of sorts to how Qin will act in his new post, and will be an early indicator if his occupying the Foreign Minister position will have a significant impact of China-US relations.

Sweden's NATO Seat is Hanging by a Thread

Protests in Turkey are continuing following the burning of the Quaran by Rasmus Paladun, a Swedish activist. Just like most other religions, the burning of the Islamic Holy Book has caused wide spread discussion and protest. Rasmus chose an absolutely awful time to demonstrate his beliefs in such radical fashion. Sweden is one of the nations currently pending entry to NATO after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Turkey, as a member of NATO, is carefully considering their next moves. Some Swedish are protesting in return, hanging an effigy of the Turkish president while surrounded by police. Turks claim the Swedish are showing "state sponsored Islamphobia" and I'm inclined to agree. Free speech only goes so far before it can become problematic. If Sweden is not admitted into NATO and a war occurs, Rasmus could be potentially viewed as the catalyst.

New bill to boost EU’s position in the global clean tech race

The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen introduced a new bill at the World Economic Forum called the Net-Zero Industry Act. The bill is aimed at increasing funding for the green tech industry, making it easier for European member states to use funds for green research and tech. The bill is also meant to boost funding for Important Projects of Common European Interest. This is a great example of how economic interdependence plays a role in maintaining and improving international relations.

Who's Threatening Israeli Democracy? - Carter Vance

The current Israeli Supreme Court is being accused of ignoring the voter's voices and instead rejecting a candidate for the cabinet based on "unreasonable in the extreme".  Mr. Deri was convicted of graft conviction and tax evasion however, was not punished for these crimes.  While the voters apparently overlooked his past transgressions and voted for him to return to office, the supreme court emphatically denied his appointment.  The question is should a government based on democracy be allowed to ignore the voice of the voters when there are fair concerns to be considered such as past crimes of the candidate. The next concern is if the supreme court can reject an elected official, are there any limits to their control. Unlike American democracy where there is shared appointment power, Israel's supreme courts does not have democratic checks.

Regional Airlines in Europe Oppose France's Short-Haul Flight Ban

France recently banned domestic flights along three routes in which brief travel by train or bus is seen as a more environmentally friendly option. This was a major step taken in the direction of reducing carbon emissions by airplanes. However, airline industry groups in Europe argue that the ban infringes upon the EU's freedom of movement and is ineffective in reducing carbon emissions. They plan to carry-out an informal legal battle with the French government to counter the restrictions. On the other side of things, environmental activists argue that the restrictions are too limited.

Ukraine Requests Western Weapons to Combat the Russian Forces

With the Russian offense preparing for the next phase of war (assumed to begin in the spring and all about tank warfare), Ukraine requests for Western weapons. Instead of the "aging" T-72 tanks, Lieutenant General Naiev urges Ukraine's allies to supply more modern tanks, like the German Leopard 2's and British Challengers. The hope is that with the modernized weapons, Ukraine will only need 200-300 tanks to outdo 2,000-3,000 Soviet-era tanks - the style of tank that Russia is currently using. However, some Ukrainian allies, like Germany, are stalling the supply of weapons, which will cause the Ukrainian soldiers to "die more often and with greater regularity."

Germany has stalled on sending tanks to Ukraine

Germany was expected to announce a decision on sending Leopard 2 Tanks, a vital modern military vehicle, to Germany this past Friday. However, they announced they needed more time to decide. NATO and Kyiv are urging Germany to step up their military aid. Germany being on the more hesitant side to send more aid and has urged the U.S. to send their own tanks to Ukraine. 13 other European countries posses Leopard 2 tanks, and have agreed to re-export some to Kyiv but can not do so without Germany's approval.

Female UN Envoys meet with Taliban Leaders to Discuss Ban on Female Aid Workers in Afghanistan

After the US withdrew troops from Afghanistan in August of 2021, the Taliban quickly stepped up to claim power. The Taliban is a radical Islamic group that began to seize the rights of females in many different aspects of life. One being, ordering all local and non-governmental organizations to stop their female employees from coming to work or risk having their licenses revoked. About half a dozen foreign aid groups have stopped their operations in Afghanistan as a result. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and the Executive Director of UN Women Sima Bahous met with the Taliban officials. They talked about the need to uphold human rights, especially those of women and girls. Afghanistan is struggling with the risk of famine, poverty, and heavy economic decline. Almost 28 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in this country.  But due to this meeting, some organizations, like healthcare, have resumed. Let's hope changes for the better continue to happen in Afghanistan.

Over one thousand police officers in riot gear showed up after protesters showed up to stop the destruction of the town to build a coal mine. Many climate activists showed up at the site with thousands more expected to show up. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained at the town and recently was released. The town sits on the edge of an already existing coal mine, making it a controversial point for many climate activists.
