US, Australia expand ties with an eye on China

The US is in talks with Australia to base some of our ships, planes and other military supplies on Australian bases.  The US says that they want to have more of a presence in the southern hemisphere to react to conflicts and natural disasters faster.  That is a rational reason to have military access there, it is a show of power and a move to diversify military assets.  However the article also talks about China and teaming up with Australia to try to have more control in China.  I didn't know that Australia was a big enough world player to try to push around China even with the help of the US.  I think that China is becoming a major world power and as much as I don't like it and don't want it to happen it is possible that they may take over the US as most powerful.  I just don't see why Australia I must be missing something.  I personally think that we are working more closely with Australia because we have been losing ties with Europe recently.
