Algeria to arm civilians against Islamist militants

The Algerian government has announced they will arm residents in remote areas of the country to help them fight Islamist militants. According to BBC News, a branch of Al-Qaeda in North Africa has been recently active in Algeria. These militants are officially known as the Islamic Maghreb. They have been known to kidnap and attack citizens of the country and surrounding areas. Particularly in 2007-2008, the AQIM was heavily involved in car bombings and suicide attacks along the Mediterranean coast. The minster of Algeria, Daho Ould Kablia, says his ministry will honor the request from civilians to fight against terrorism. However, Kablia is proceeding with caution because a previous policy of arming civilians ended under an amnesty agreement in the early 1990's. The regions within the country that will recieve the arms was not specified but reports suggest they will be sent to a group of tribespeople in the Sahara region.
