Russian-Chinese Veto: A Moral Stain on the UN

After an effort to end the violence in Syria the United Nations tried to pass a resolution that would condemn Bashar al-Assad regime. Unfortunately, Russia and China still vetoed the submitted resolution after it had gone through three drafts. With the escalating violence in the country action is essential to aid those being repressed and killed. The UK foreign secretary has expressed his outrage and disappointment from Russia and China’s veto. He added, “ It’s clear, given what happened, that Russia and China will be held responsible for this terrible situation.” Russia argued that the resolution solely targeted the government and not the armed opposition groups. Also, China defended its veto saying that it was not convinced that the resolution would help the issue. In the United States, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton thought this latest veto was a travesty. She went on to explain that the United States efforts would not end with the resolution veto but get stronger. The United States is looking at tightening is sanctions against Syria in an effort weaken the governments ability to use arms against protestors. The weapons being supplied to the regime must become a priority in stoping the violence. In a reflection of the Russian-Chinese veto the French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe called yesterday a “moral stain” on the United Nations.
