Saturday October 16, 2010, Iran set free American Business man Reza Taghavi, 71, after being imprisoned for two and a half years because of suspicious thoughts that he might have had ties with an opposition group. Taghavi was never officially charged with a crime and he denied knowingly supporting the opposition group named Tondar, which authorities have accused of bombing a mosque in 2008. Iranian officials are “comfortable that he was in fact used by this organization, and comfortable that he does not pose a threat to them and that he can leave and go back to the United States,” said lawyer of Taghavi, Pierre Prosper. Iranians have accused Taghavi of passing two hundred dollars in cash to a man tied to the Tondar group. He frequently visits Iran due to business and family and had recently recieved the money from a friend who advised him to pass it on to an Iranian. The case has been suspended for now.
