Ecuador detains 40 police suspects following revolt

In a followup from the article I posted last week about Ecuador's political state, more than 40 Ecuadorian police officers were arrested today in connection with last week's riots and protests. 200 people were injured and at four people were killed in the protests over a public servant law to cut police wages. Since the attacks, President Rafeal Correa has stated that the insubordination was from a few officers and not the entire police force. However, a state of emergency is still in effect until Friday. Correa insists the protests were an attempt at a coup and is determined to remove the offending officers from the force. His blame this week has been focused on former President Lucio Gutierrez for instigating the unrest. Correa has been using the media to broadcast his opinions and views on what he wants to happen in the aftermath. Interestingly, Ecuador has had eight presidents since 1996 and is not known for having a state of political stability. The effects of this coup attempt will definitley be in the news for some time to come.
