Huge Typhoon Expected to Hit The Philippines Monday

A major typhoon (Megi) is expected to hit the Philippines Monday at 8:00 AM. It is a category 5 (the highest category), and it is expected to bring winds of 155 mph, waves bigger than 46 feet high, and up to 8 inches of rain per hour. It is predicted that it will retain the strength of 250 KPH as it crosses north Luzon on Monday. The government has already advised 7 million people in its direct path to stock up on food and medicine. The governor of northern Cagayan province, Alvaro Antonio, told Reuters the typhoon could cause significant damage to the rice crop, "Based on our estimates about 50-60 percent of our rice production could either be destroyed or damaged. We are the top producer of rice," he said. The Cagayan Vally produces about a third of the country's rice. Vehicles and generators have been sent to the north to help aid in the rescue and relief operations.
