In France the law banning the burqa and other facial coverings is legal, according to constitutional authorities. The ban passed throw both houses and will go into effect in spring 2011. The ban will impose a fine if any face-covering veil is worn in public, or prison punishment for forcing a woman to wear the veil. Because the ban does not prohibit religious exercise in a place of worship, the ban does not infringe in constitutional rights. The hijab and chador are not banned.
