Times Square bomber gets life sentence

Today, U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum sentenced Faisal Shahzad to life in prison with no chance of parole. Shahzad, who is a Pakistani immigrant, was convicted after his attempt to bomb Times Square on May 1st. Police arrested Shahzad was two days after a smoking bomb was found in the back of a SUV. A street vendor who saw the smoke alerted police. The judge sentenced him to send a message to any future attackers, that the consequences will severe. During the hearing Shahzad defended his attempt to kill Americans, even saying "Brace yourselves, because the war with Muslims has just begun." At one point judge Cedarbaum cut him off to ask if he had sworn allegiance to the United States when became a citizen last year. Shahzad said he wanted to kill at least 40 people. If he was not given a live sentence he planned to set off another bomb two weeks later in a second, undisclosed location.
