9 people die from sinking Haitian immigrant boat

Rachel Polster

On Wednesday in Miami, 27 people were pulled out of the water by the Coast Guard after a boat that was full of Haitian immigrants capsized and sank. The boat had flipped in the very early morning and wasn't found until 10 hours later and at least nine people are dead. The people on the boat were trying to get to the United States from the Bahamas, but no one has made conclusions as to why the boat sank. This rescue was the largest in recent years and included two large Coast Guard Boats as well as two helicopters and a Falcon jet from Miami. It is amazing to see what people go through in order to 'get to a better life'. This incident fuels more debate over changing the immigration policies. Haitian immigrants are seeking refuge because Haiti is the poorest country in the hemisphere and there are threatening food shortages. However, Haitians are constantly being deported and currently a group of 30,000 Haitians are facing deportation. Many people are fighting to grant them a right to stay until the situation in their country improves.
