Pope, Hope in Hand, Arrives in Mideast

Posted by Justin Bresolin

Pope Benedict XVI makes history by traveling to the Muslim Holy Land, being the second Pope in history to make such a tour of the region. Landing in Jordan, Benedict plans to travel to Israel and the Palestinian territories during his tour. Having led a papacy thus far marred by controversial statements and actions that have alienated the Catholic Church from many in the Jewish and Muslim world, the Pope will be deeply scrutinized by all as he makes a planned 32 speeches at major holy sites in the region.

In addition to hopes of increasing his standing among Jews and Muslims, Benedict also aims to promote peace efforts between Israel and Palestine, a difficult feat in the face of already hostile reception amongst the region's populace. In addition, the Pope must take into account the fractious Israeli government and the recent Israeli attack on Gaza, resulting in an estimated 1,300 deaths.

Reactions from officials are varied. The Vatican's Jewish interlocutors are hopeful for the repair of tense relations between the two religious communities, while Israel hopes the visit will result in a boost to Christian tourism in the region. Many Palestinians are not hopeful for the visit, arguing that the Pope is already pro-Israel and that his efforts to please them will do Palestine no favors.

It may not seem as important to many from a global political standpoint, but the Pope's visit demonstrates the challenges and repercussions that follow diplomatic relations. In addition to having to safely navigate the diverse religious and political opinion present in the region at this time, the Pope's actions during his tour could have a considerable influence in the Israeli/Palestinian peace efforts. Even though the Pope represents no particular state or government, his influence in national affairs can be considerable, and as such is worth watching.
