A Russian energy corporation, Gazprom, is attempting to form a natural gas contract with Poland. This contract would lock Poland into a long-term agreement, thus decreasing resource diversification within Europe. The European Commision is taking strides towards dashing the possibility of such an agreement in hopes to keep a level playing field. If the commission is successful, this could mean trouble for Russia, who has been adamant on restricting access to a pipeline which stretches from Russia through Europe. European Energy laws have long sought to prevent agreements of this nature and has made it clear that any sort of "stranglehold" on energy resources should be broken. Poland depends on Russia for around 60% of its natural gas and has long been a supporter of equal access to the pipeline. Talks seem to be going smoothly and if both unions still seek to form a contract it would need to be renegotiated so that it does not violate the European Energy Laws.
