The Taliban and the President of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzi, seem to be in peace talks. This is also the first time the Taliban figure is fully authorized to speak on behalf of the Quetta Shura, the name of the Afghan Taliban, and its leader Mohammad Omar. Reportedly, the Taliban is extremely serious about these talks, only seeking “a comprehensive agreement that would include participation of some Taliban figures in the government and the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops on an agreed timeline.” While the Taliban’s resilience on the battlefield would make most believe that they are winning, sources indicate that “that they are going to be sidelined…They know that more radical elements are being promoted within their rank and file outside their control. . . . All these things are making them absolutely sure that, regardless of [their success in] the war, they are not in a winning position.” This is great news for the Obama administration. Earlier peace would mean a huge political gain, as well as Obama not needing to go head to head with his generals anymore. While all sources stress that this is still beginning of talks, if successful, it could have the potential for peace for a long war torn country. If Karzi can make peace with the Taliban, this could give his government the legitimacy it so sorely needs.
