Palestinians Threaten to End Peace Talks

The Palestinian leadership is threatening an end to the Isreali-Palestinian peace talks that started back up again in Spetember after nearly a two year break. The Palestinians are upset over the expiration of a 10 month ban on the building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank that expired last Sunday. The Palestinians are saying that the resumption of peace talks requires a tangible step. They want Isreal to continue the freeze on settlement building in the West Bank to show that they are serious about making peace. Isreali prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that a further freeze would quote: " fracture his right-wing coalition government, which is dominated by pro-settlement parties, including his own Likud bloc". He did however appeal to the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to continue the good and sincere peace talks that were just started. The United States is backing Isreali, sending envoy George Mitchell to various Arab countries in order to secure backing for continued peace talks. At the same time the terrorist group Hamas, who is in control of the Gaza Strip, is urging Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to withdraw from the peace talks. The Palestinian leadership is not expected to make a final decision on the issue until after an Arab League meeting next week that will take place in Libya.
