Travel Alerts for Americans Traveling in Europe

The U.S. has issued a general travel alert for Americans that are traveling in Europe, due to the possible threat of an attack from al Qaeda or similar group. The alerts are not supposed to tell Americans not to travel there, but to take "common-sense precautions" and to be careful, especially in public places or tourist attractions. It believed that it would be a "Mumbai style" attack, referring to the terrorist attacks in Mumbai that lasted three days in November 2008. Ten men targeted two major hotels, the Victoria train station, and a Jewish cultural center, which killed 160 people. Western Intelligence officials are looking into threats all over Europe. Dom Hamilton, who is a formal counter terrorism expert believes that these alerts are really only a precaution, because they do not want to be accused of not warning Americans of these possible attacks. A U.S. official said that they issued the alerts due to the amount of intelligence on possible terror threats, not because of any new intelligence.
