Struggles continue to occur the nation of Congo. On New Year's Day, 33 women were raped in a coordinated attack by up to four armed men. Rape has been an ongoing problem in Congo, as the United Nations says rape is a frequent weapon of war. The Democratic Republic of Congo was named the "rape capital of the world," with 15,000 women raped in eastern Congo in 2009. The United Nations also reported a mass rape over several days last summer, slamming Congo's security forces for failing to prevent the situation from occurring. In 2009, 5,600 rape victims in Congo were being treated for medical and psychosocial care.
