The newly signed law (but still not published) by the Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been very controversial. It allows marital rape by stopping a wife from refusing sex and prevents her from leaving her home. The law only applies to the country's minority Shia population, however there have been many protesters, Sunni and Shia and also from leaders of nations from around the world, that say that this new law violates women's rights, Afghanistan's constitution and Afghanistan's civil law. This new law has been compared to how life was when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.
