Races

By: Michelle Cole

In this article from CNN.com, it talks about how people from around the globe are competing in a race in extremely harsh conditions. For 6 days these people have to travel across desserts where the temperatures reach 120 degrees, and they have to carry all the supplies they may need in a backpack that they travel with. They don't stop and stay in fancy hotels or get the luxury of a shower, they simply have to race across the dessert for 6 days, and they even have to pay upwards of $3,000 for this adventure. There are 214 people racing and they started racing today, and will continue for almost the next week.

The interesting part about this is that even though it is not only extremely hard to do, it is very expensive, and obviously requires a good chunk of time off work, they say that race attendance is the highest it has been in years. The article also says that it sort of puts everyone on an even playing force. You have CEO's racing, sweating, stinking, in the same way that you would have a part time worker from McDonalds. While I don't think that running this race will drastically change the way we see social class in America, it is an interesting way of looking at it.
