The long civil war between the government of Sri Lanka and Tamil Tiger rebel forces has come to an end.
As government forces closed in on the final stronghold, Tamil Tiger rebel forces agreed to "silence our guns" but this is not the first time that rebels have called for an end to fighting when trapped by the Sri Lanka military. The President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, will soon announce that military operations and skirmishes against the Tamil forces have ended at the Parliament.
Formally known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the rebel fighters have been battling the government as early as 1983. The civil war has claimed over 70,000 lives during this time. 25 years of bloodshed has finally come to an end for the people of Sri Lanka.
