US Seeks Extradition of the "Merchant of Death".

The United States is seeking the extradition of Victor Bout; a Russian arms dealer also nicknamed “the merchant of death” for his role in role in supplying weapons to fighting groups around the world. From terrorist organizations, to United States army in Iraq, Mr. Bout has sold arms indiscriminately.

In 2008 he was arrested in Thailand after an operation that involved an undercover US agent disguising as a FARC rebel.

Russia is concerned that the United States is interfering with the Thailand judiciary. They accuse the U.S. of trying to influence a ruling that would favor his extradition. If convicted by a US court, Mr. Bout would be sentenced to life imprisonment.

It is also suspected that Mr. Bout might be a former KGB agent with knowledge of classified state secrets. This might explain Russia’s strong sensitivities to the case.

Overall, politics aside, this is a huge step in combating global arms trade. Mr. Bout has caused the suffering of millions of people.
