Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez who was sworn into office February 2, 1999 is holding a summit with some of his closest leftist allies in Latin America. The motive; the celebration of his 10 year anniversary as president of Venezuela. Attending will be leaders or representatives from the group called the Bolivarian Alternative for People of Our Americas, better known as ALBA. This group was created few years ago as an attempt to counterbalance United State's influence in Latin America. Bolivian President Evo Morales, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, Cuban Vice President Carlos Lage, Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit will attend the summit.
At ALBA's previous meetings the leaders have began discussion on the creation of a common currency throughout the region. Officials talked about creating a currency called "Sucre". Sucre is as Spanish acronym for " United System of Regional Compensation". Sucre is also the constitutional capital of Bolivia. This summit also coincides with Bolivia's approval of the new Constitution, that will allow the nation's President, Evo Morales, to run for another five-year term in December.
