Venezuela's Chavez declares victory in term-limits referendum
According to CNN's website Hugo Chavez will officially be able to run for a third term in 2012. The referendum, which was voted on Sunday night, ended with a 54.4% vote supporting Chavez's power to run for a third term. The referendum grants this power not only to the president, but also governors, mayors, national and international legislators. This event is said to be "a victory for a people and a clear victory for revolution." The article claims that much of the people, mostly students who were opposed to the idea, will respect the decision nonethless. The students were opposed because 300,000 newly eligible voters were not able to register. The election is said to be a test of his influence; the candidates he supported won a majority of the seats. More recently, a Spanish member of the European Parliament was expelled after calling Chavez a "dictator."
