Europe Slow to Back US in Afghanistan

By: Steve Stack

President Obama has made clear intentions to jump-start the war in Afghanistan and to do so he looked towards Nato and other European nations for assistance. In an article in the New York Times the annual meeting of Nato this year was held in Stasbourg, France. During the meeting President Obama urged for increased involvement by European nations to help in Afghanistan. European nations agreed to increase the amount of troops in Afghanistan but majorly for temporary periods. They mostly are sending troops to keep peace during the upcoming elections in August. As for America, Obama has planned for an increase to 68,000 troops in Afghanistan; a number up from 38,000. President Obama insists that it is imperative that the world control the problem that is Al Qaeda but that it is also important that the world help Afghanistan come to terms with equality for women, promotion of law, and economic development. When reading this I thought of the strengths of the Islamic-West conflict. The Islamic world, especially in the Middle East, is a very different world than the world Americans and Europeans live in. The Islamic community's dislike or even hatred for America and the West is largely based on America and the West placing their own prerogatives and culture on the already established Islamic culture. It just raises the question: will more troops solve the problems of an already problematic relationship?
