Latin American countries unite: will U.S accept Cuba in the OAS?

By Fiorella Bafundo

The Brazilian President Lula da Silva and the Colombian President Uribe will propose in the American Summit this week in Trinidad y Tobago the inclusion of Cuba, which is the only country of the Americas that is outside the regional institution. The idea is to demand for the re-inclusion of Cuba in the OAS, denied to it since 1962, and also for the retirement of the embargo put on the island 47 years ago as a demonstration of a “real” shift in Obama’s administration foreign policy and U.S relations towards the region.
By far, Barack Obama has showed a different approach in international relations towards countries such as Cuba, at least by word, never imagined with George W. Bush; does this mean a change in U.S strategy? Maybe is too soon, but as long as this administration says it is going to change, more countries will push to see how far the real change will be…
