The Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) lost their final stronghold on the island, and their remaining forces have been forced into a civilian safety zone. The Sri Lankan military is claiming to have killed over 200 rebels over the weekend and over 400 as the rebels attempted an ambush on Monday. The rebels are attempting to deter the Sri Lankan military by using the civilians in the safe zone as shields. The rebels are attributing over 200 civilian casualties to the government’s military. It is estimated that close to 200,000 civilians are in the 5.5 square mile safety zone and attempts to flee are being blocked by the rebels. The LTTE had established several autonomous regions along the north coast of the island in its decades long resistance against the Sri Lankan government. However, the group has suffered devastating military losses in recent months.
