Australia Floods Nearing Peak

Australia is in a state of disaster. A cyclone in December has brought on horrible floods. Normally Australia experiences flooding in this season, but the flooding has expanded to more cities than normal this year. Almost 40 cities have been affected. The major city being affected, Queensland, is experiencing great turmoil because the floods have ruined food crops, further raising food prices around the world, but the rains have also halted the nation's coal mining industry in Queensland. The coal mining industry loss for Queensland has already been estimated to be about $1 billion dollars. This loss in coal is threatening to raise prices around the world. Many people have been evacuated from their homes and have been living in shelters since the floods have begun. The prime minister has already promised money to those affected by these devastating floods. An army general was also named to help combat these forces of nature. He is going to lead the recovery actions in the coming months.
