Pakistan Abortion Hotline Sparks Controversy

A Pakistani birth control hotline, which was launched in June, has received mixed reviews from medical and religious leaders in the country.

Created by Gulalai Ismail, the main focus of this hotline is the hope of lowering the high rate of pregnancy-related deaths in Pakistan.

Research has found that there are over 30,000 pregnancy related deaths each year in Pakistan, between 5-15% of them are related to abortions.

To help this cause, this hotline advises women to use misoprostol, which is an inexpensive drug is primarily used to treat postpartum hemorrhages, to prevent ulcers, and to induce labor. It is also used as an alternative to illegal or expensive surgical abortions.

In an interview with change.org, the creator of the hotline states: “For us, the most important thing is to prevent the loss of women who die because of having unsafe abortions.”

Sahailee hotline is the first in Asia, however similar hotlines exist throughout Latin America.

This seems to be a big step in the westernization of the middle east.
