Security threat level for London raised to 'severe'

The British security threat level was raised from 'substantial' to 'severe' on January 5 due to intelligence reports that cited the possibility of a Mumbai-style terrorist attack in London.  Because of this, extra security precautions are being taken at Heathrow Airport and Underground stations throughout the city and officials ensure that a wide range of security tactics are being used and that staff is constantly vigilant.  Britain has been under a high security threat level since January 2010, and was considered to be a potential target of terrorist attacks during the Fall of 2010, along with many other countries in Europe.  This threat was severe enough that in October, the US State Department issued a travel warning to all US citizens within Europe.  It is currently unclear whether the current threat is related to the threat from last fall.
