Southern Sudan Votes

The first of seven days of voting in Southern Sudan went extremely well. There was a great deal of concern about the possibilities of conflict arising during this event; there have been north/south skirmishes throughout the week and even continuing as recently as Saturday. However the actual process of going to the polls, although over ten thousand voters were present, occurred in a calm, orderly manner. This event was strongly supported by numerous world leaders and nations hoping for a new era of peace for Sudan. The atmosphere was generally positive, with many people expressing a great deal of hope for the future of Southern Sudan. The voting was not completely one-sided; some are still convinced that unity is best. For the vast majority, this opportunity for the Sudanese people to determine their own fate is a step towards freedom and independence, and a step away from a violent past and a harrowing civil war.
