Doubts in Taliban's Ties with Al Qaeda

People think that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are very close in their ideological beliefs. But in an New York University report issued Monday, there is much hostility between the group. Before September 11, 2001, there was already hostility and after the attacks happened, there was even more hostility. The report was written by two individuals, Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn. There are many ideas from a Taliban diplomat's autobiography, read by the two authors who lived in Afghanistan. The American officials are saying that they share the same ideological views and that the only way to get them to negotiate is to use the military surge to weaken the Taliban. The authors think the complete opposite, that the military surge will make it even harder to negotiate.
