In Berlin, Chancellor Angela Merkel has been holding talks in developing a nationwide plan on renewable energy. These talks have been held with governors of Germany's sixteen states. Up until now, each state has developed its own procedures for the expansion of renewable resources in its territory but, unfortunately, this has led to conflict between the states. Furthermore, responsibilities have been split up between the ministries of the environment and the economy, "with the education minister responsible for financing research on renewable energy." Public support for Merkel's plan faces a drawback from a nearly fifty percent leap in a consumer tax for the renewable next year, whereas the Social Democratic Party (the opposition) has pounced on the weaknesses of the project. After Friday's meeting, Merkel has said, "Germans can be assured that we feel committed to the goal of energy transformation." Basically, Merkel wants to see energy generated by wind farms in the north to be transmitted to the industrial south, and her plan is to go before Parliament next month.
