Hong Kong Democracy

On June 4th, in Hong Kong, more 100,000 gathered in this semiautonomous Chinese city. The gathered to celebrate the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown 25 years ago and 1,000 miles away in Beijing, where the mainland government still forbids citizens from discussing the pro-democracy movement. People in Hong Kong want a democratic government, but are opposed by the pro-Beijing people and the Chinese government. This celebration heightened the tensions with Beijing are domestic issues such as elections in 2017, which will for the first time be held under a system of universal voting.
