Nearly 800 killed in Iraq in May, the deadliest all year

According to the United Nations, nearly 800 people were killed across Iraq which included 196 members of the Iraqi security force, the rest were civilians.
The victims of attacks were by Sunni Islamist insurgents who have been regaining ground and momentum Iraq over the past year.
The real number of deaths would be higher if the UN counted the casualties from the western province of Anbar. Iraqi army has been fighting tribal and insurgent groups since they overran two cities at the start of the year.
Even with the security getting worse, Iraq’s incumbent Prime Minister Nouri-al-Maliki won the largest share of parliamentary sears in national elections last month.
Luckily, the number of deaths is still below the levels back in 2006 and 2007. “I strongly deplore the sustained level of violence and terrorist acts that continues rocking the country,”
