King of Spain Abdicates to Allow New Generation to Take Over

In a recent announcement, King Juan Carlos of Spain has abdicated the throne to his son, Prince Felipe. Some believe this move is caused by the scandals that have been surrounding the royal family, particularly Princess Cristina and her husband, Duke of Palma. Prince Felipe has been mostly untouched by the criticisms about the royal family's lifestyle and fiances during a time of joblessness and economic crisis in Spain. King Juan Carlos said that he hopes his son will bring "a new chapter of hope" and increased stability to the nation.

Overall, it seems that this is a political move by the former king in order to keep his family in power (even though Spain is a democracy). Rather than continue to take the criticisms and scandals his daughter and her husband are allegedly taking part in, he'd rather hand the throne to his more stable and responsible son, in order to return the country to stability. Even if Prince Felipe will not have much say in his democracy, he can help be a symbol of stability to the people of Spain and potentially give them hope for the future.
