President Juan Manuel
Santos of Colombia has decided to ask the government to suspend aerial
fumigation of coca plants (used to make cocaine) because it is believed to be a
cancer causing agent. In March, the World Health Organization claimed that
glyphosate (a chemical released on the coca plant to fumigate it) is “probably
carcinogenic to humans”. If the aerial fumigation of coca ceases many fear that
Colombia’s war on drugs will face complications and ultimately be threatened.
