Macedonian officials claim that Kosovans led a group of over thirty armed men in a deadly confrontation in the Macedonian town of Kumanovo. The Albanian minority has been fighting for greater rights and some advocate an independent Albanian state within Macedonia since 2001, and tensions have escalated despite peace agreements. Eight police officers and fourteen gunmen were killed in the fighting. Both sides blame each other for destabilizing the country.
