Political unrest in Thailand heated up Monday night as anti-government protesters and residents turned against troops. The troops were trying to push the protesters out of their base near the Prime Minister's offices. The resistance brought on the use of tear gas on the 5,000 or so protesters who have been holding out since March 26th and the deaths of two men.
The resistence is coming from those who want the current Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to resign and support the ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Even though much of the political tension has blown over since Thaksin's disposal, he remains very popular in the impoverished countryside for his populist policies.
