Holiday truce begins in Sri Lanka

By: Liz Hasseld

Sri Lanka's armed forces are under a truce that suspends attacks for 48 hours for the celebration of their New Year. President Mahinda Rajapakse called the truce after a cabinet meeting. This truce allows civilians to leave the conflict zone safely. The UN took advantage of the truce to deliver aid.

This truce gives tens of thousands of trapped civilians a chance to leave the war zone. Before the truce people did not have a choice whether they could leave war zone. The government claims troops are surrounding a no fire zone and will enter the area to rescue civilians. The government claims that the rebel tamils are contained in a safe area so that civilians can leave safely.

This article talks about this being a great first step for the country. It will be interesting to see if the tamil tigers cooperate and do not attack during this truce. I hope civillians are able to reach thier families for their new year.
