Turkey and Armenia poised to restore relations

By: Kurt Kamrath

Turkey and Armenia may soon agree to reopen their borders. The countries have agreed to establish a formal negotiation process aimed at dealing with the Armenian occupation of a region in Azerbaijan and Turkey's refusal to acknowledge the genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire against the Armenians in 1915.

The move to ease tensions will be a great aid to American interests in the region. The US currently must back Turkey as a vital NATO ally. However, Armenia contains pipelines carrying oil and natural gas. The improvement of this relationship will allow the US to work with Armenia to secure these supply routes. Also, Armenia is situated in a volatile region of former soviet nations. It is hoped that this move will set a precedent in the region leading to greater stability.
